The following must be taken into account when determining the proper biological treatment:

  • the effluent’s biodegradability (COD/BOD ratio, beware when this ratio exceeds 3);
  • concentration levels of COD, BOD, TKN and P, SS;
  • salinity - sudden fluctuations can adversely affect biological treatment efficiency.

All techniques featured in biological processes and methane fermentation apply; however, the optimum application range for these different technologies is summarised in the diagram provided in figure 2:
