Ion exchange treatment is used for:

• Demineralised water production for industrial processes, whether for industrial product manufacturing processes or in steam generator supply.

• Softened water production to accompany industrial processes, for use in laundry washing applications for example. Softening is also used to supply low pressure boilers, and for the partial softening of make-up water for cooling circuits.

• The carbonate removal of process waters namely for drinking water or in the agri-food industry, and in the pre-treatment of decarbonated, softened water produced for low pressure boilers or even medium pressure boilers.

• The production of nitrate-free process water namely for use in drinking water production or in the agri-food industry, and more particularly, industries involved in the manufacturing of food products for babies and young children. In this last case, industrial requirements may go far beyond simply respecting the “drinking water” regulations in place in the country concerned. For the record: these same anionic resins used in the form of chlorides can be used for water desulphation.

• In the same register, agri-food industries are made aware of the presence of perchlorate in natural water or supply water, treatment using ion-exchanging resins is an effective and tried and tested technique.

• Boron treatment via ion-exchanging resins is also effective.

• Water de-oxygenation is one of the domains of application of resin treatment. This treatment is namely performed on demineralised water supplied to high pressure steam generators in particular to fill the generator when it is stopped on a frequent basis, and must be rapidly restarted, as in the case of large capacity vessels. This treatment occurs using anionic resins in the form of sulphite (SO₃).
