Reading time:This kingdom comprises isolated or colony-forming, single cell microscopic organisms. We saw earlier how its prokaryote properties distinguished it from the two following kingdoms (plant and animal); however, bacteria also have affinities with each of these two kingdoms; in effect, the bacteria classification put forward here (Prévot, 1961) (table 3), actually includes four divisions: alongside true bacteria (Eubacteria), the other three have a degree of analogy with either fungi (Mycobacteria) or algae (Algobacteria) or with some single cell animals or protozoa (Pro¬tozoobacteria). Figure 1 (see micro-organisms for which freshwater is their natural habitat) illustrates the polymorphism of the bacteria kingdom.
