sample identification, transport and preservation
Reading time:This section applies to all types of liquid or solid samples (ref. ISO 5667-2 granular and powdered materials and ISO 5667-10 granular and powdered materials).
identification
Samples collected should be clearly identified. Each flask should wear a label displaying:
- the name of the operator that collected the samples;
- sampling site;
- location and type;
- sampling method (grab or 24-hour average, proportional to flow rate or time);
- date, time (start of sampling) and duration;
- any information on sample preservation techniques.
Issue a sample chain of custody form detailing the analysis to be carried out by the laboratory. On this form make sure to indicate the volume (a flow rate, number of skips…) that transited through the plant during the sampling period.
sample transport and preservation for analysis purposes
As a rule, it is imperative that samples collected be stored in a cold location (+ 2 to + 5 °C), away from light, including during transportation to the analytical laboratory.
For additional information, please refer to ISO standard 5667-3 (30 pages); which provides information on the preservation conditions based on the parameter to analyse… Table 1 below contains those recommendations for the most common analysis.
